Jít vs. Jet: A Refresher

A couple of episodes ago, we clarified the difference between „jít“ and „jet.“ But, let’s face it, when chatting with friends or family, Czechs often drop formalities faster than you can say „AHOJ!“ Spoken Czech is delightfully lazy, skipping precise pronunciation whenever possible.

Life Beyond Textbooks: Understanding JÍT Informally

In everyday conversations, particularly in Bohemia, you’ll find Czechs tend to skip the ‚J‘ sound in the forms of the verb „jít“. Here’s a quick look:

Textbook Version:

• Jdu domů.
• Jdeš ven?
• Jana jde do práce.

And the relaxed, common Czech way:

• Du* domů.
• Deš* ven?
• Jana de* do práce.
