Everyday Czech: What You’ll Hear in a Czech Living Room

Woman welcoming a visitor into a living room – How Czechs Really Say It.

How Czechs Really Say It • Room by Room: The Living Room

Someone invites you into their Czech home. You take off your shoes, put down your things, and follow them into the living room.

Nothing unusual. Until they start talking.

You know obývací pokoj. But they say obývák*. And you begin to wonder: “Will everything I’ve learnt have a different name here?”

If everyday Czech sometimes makes you feel like this, come in. You’re in the right place.

In Czech Housing Vocabulary: What Do Czechs Actually Say?, we explored the words Czechs use for the buildings they live in. Now we’re stepping inside.

Welcome to Room by Room, a new little series within How Czechs Really Say It. I’m taking you through a Czech home to discover the language you’ll hear there — through little conversations, familiar situations, and expressions you might not recognise yet.

Our first stop? The living room. Or, as your Czech host might say: „Pojď do obýváku*.“

* informal / colloquial Czech

Listen to the Podcast Episode

Come into the obývák* and listen to a little conversation between a host and a visitor.

How much can you follow the first time? Listen, let me walk you through it, and then see how the same conversation feels the second time.

Do I Have to Speak Like This?

You don’t have to start using every informal Czech word you hear. Your obývací pokoj is still perfectly good Czech.

But recognising obývák* gives you one more way to understand the people around you. You can follow the conversation without stopping to translate an unfamiliar word in your head.

Understanding an expression and choosing to use it yourself are two different things. Start by noticing. You can decide what becomes part of your own Czech.

Want to come back to the Czech from this episode?

Download the companion handout and keep it nearby when you listen again. Pause when you need to, say a few expressions out loud, and give yourself time to make them familiar.

Make Everyday Czech Part of Your Day

Recognising a new expression while listening is a lovely little moment. Remembering it when you need it? That takes coming back to Czech and doing something with it.

That’s what we do inside the Czech Your Day Community — through stories, real-life conversations, and activities that get you speaking.

Come and give your Czech a little space in your day.

Don’t study Czech. Experience it.

Next stop: the kitchen.

You know the word kuchyně. Let’s see how far that gets you. 🙂

Renata Hrkalová is the creator of Czech Your Day—a learning experience that helps people discover Czech through stories, real-life conversations, and everyday practice. She believes that languages aren't meant to be memorised—they're meant to be lived. That's why she creates videos, podcasts, learning materials, and an online community where students don't just study Czech... they experience it. Her mission is simple: Don't study Czech. Experience it.
