Czech Fruit Vocabulary

Let’s start with a list of different kinds of fruit in Czech along with their English translations:

  • Pomeranč: Orange
  • Meloun: Melon
  • Černý rybíz: Black Currant
  • Mandarinka: Tangerine
  • Meruňka: Apricot
  • Jahoda: Strawberry
  • Hruška: Pear
  • Borůvka: Blueberry
  • Švestka: Plum
  • Ostružina: Blackberry
  • Granátové jablko: Pomegranate
  • Kiwi: Kiwi
  • Jablko: Apple (informally pronounced ‚jabko*‘ in everyday conversations)

Understanding Czech Gender with Fruit

In the second part of our podcast, we’ll explore the grammatical gender of these fruits. In Czech, the word „one“ can indicate whether a noun is masculine, feminine, or neutral. Here’s how to identify the gender of these fruits using „jeden,“ „jedna,“ and „jedno“:

  • Masculine (TEN):
    • To je jeden pomeranč. (This is one orange.)
    • To je jeden meloun. (This is one melon.)
    • To je jeden černý rybíz. (This is one black currant.)
  • Feminine (TA):
    • To je jedna mandarinka. (This is one tangerine.)
    • To je jedna meruňka. (This is one apricot.)
    • To je jedna jahoda. (This is one strawberry.)
    • To je jedna hruška. (This is one pear.)
    • To je jedna borůvka. (This is one blueberry.)
    • To je jedna švestka. (This is one plum.)
    • To je jedna ostružina. (This is one blackberry.)
  • Neutral (TO):
    • To je jedno granátové jablko. (This is one pomegranate.)
    • To je jedno kiwi. (This is one kiwi.)
    • To je jedno jablko. (This is one apple.)
    • To je jedno jabko*. (This is one apple – informal.)
