Fruitful Dialogues: Talk Like a Local in Czech(S02/E05 – daily podcast CZECH YOUR DAY)

THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: OVOCE/FRUIT

THE TRANSCRIPT/HANDOUT IS DOWN BELOW

This week has definitely been fruitful. That’s why I created these two dialogues for you.

You can not only practice what you have learnt this week, you will also see the difference between TEXTBOOK VERSION of Czech and REAL-LIFE CZECH.

Dialogue One in Czech:

  • Textbook Version:
    • Jaké máš ráda ovoce? (What fruits do you like?)
    • Mám ráda švestky, jablka, meruňky. A v létě mám ráda melouny. (I like plums, apples, apricots, and in summer, I like watermelons.)
    • Jaké další ovoce máš ráda? (What other fruits do you like?)
    • Také mám ráda jahody, borůvky a rybíz. (I also like strawberries, blueberries, and currants.)
  • Real-life Version:
    • Jaký* máš ráda ovoce? (What fruits do you like?)
    • Mám ráda švestky, jabka*, meruňky. Jo*, a v létě mám ráda melouny. (I like plums, apples [colloquial], apricots, and in the summer, I like watermelons.)
    • Jaký* další ovoce máš ráda? (What other fruits do you like?)
    • Taky* mám ráda jahody, borůvky a rybíz. (I also like strawberries, blueberries, and currants.)

Dialogue Two in Czech:

  • Textbook Version:
    • Jaké máš ráda ovoce? (What fruits do you like?)

    • Já mám rád melouny, jahody a švestky. (I like watermelons, strawberries, and plums.)
    • A jaké ovoce nemáš rád? (And what fruits don’t you like?)
    • Nemám rád rybíz a kiwi. (I don’t like currants and kiwi.)
    • A proč je nemáš rád? (And why don’t you like them?)
    • Nechutnají mi, protože jsou kyselé. (They don’t taste good to me because they are sour.)
  • Real-life Version:
    • Hele*, jaký* máš ráda ovoce? (Hey, what fruits do you like?)
    • Mám ráda hrušky, borůvky a pomeranče. (I like pears, blueberries, and oranges.)
    • A jaký* ovoce máš rád ty? (And what fruits do you like?)
    • Já mám rád melouny, jahody a švestky. (I like watermelons, strawberries, and plums.)
    • A jaký* ovoce nemáš rád? (And what fruits don’t you like?)
    • Nemám rád rybíz a kiwi. (I don’t like currants and kiwi.)
    • A proč je nemáš rád? (And why don’t you like them?)
