Greetings & parts of the day in Czech

In this article we will talk about different parts of the day and the greetings that you may hear. We will not focus on the most common greetings as they deserve an article on its own…

The time frames for the parts of the day may differ for each person (therefore I use cca. in the article).

RÁNO (cca. 6:00 – 10:00 am)

  • you may hear the greeting DOBRÉ RÁNO in Standard Czech (= textbook version)
  • we sometimes prefer Common Czech/Czech slang version (= informal): DOBRÝ* RÁNO
  • we usually use this greeting when we get up and meet our loved ones

DOPOLEDNE (cca. 10:00 – 12:00)

  • the greeting DOBRÉ DOPOLEDNE (= Standard Czech) isn’t as frequent as the rest of the greetings I am mentioning in this article
  • the informal version (= Common Czech/Czech slang) is DOBRÝ* DOPOLEDNE

POLEDNE (12:00)

  • you may hear: DOBRÉ POLEDNE in Standard Czech or DOBRÝ* POLEDNE in Common Czech/Czech slang
  • this greeting is less frequent as well

ODPOLEDNE (cca. 12:00 – 18:00)

  • the greeting DOBRÉ ODPOLEDNE in Standard Czech is very frequent
  • it is definitely worth remembering also in the informal version (= Common Czech/Czech slang): DOBRÝ* ODPOLEDNE

VEČER (cca. 18:00 – 22:00)

  • this greeting is usually used when it’s getting/got dark outside
  • in Standard Czech: DOBRÝ VEČER
  • in Common Czech/Czech slang: DOBREJ* VEČER
  • sometimes you may even this informal version: DOBREJ* VEČÍR*

NOC (cca. 22:00 – 6:00 am)

  • greeting DOBROU NOC is used before going to bed (wishing GOOD NIGHT to your loved ones)
  • you may also hear this shorten informal version: DOBROU* (Common Czech/Czech slang)

PŮLNOC (24:00)

  • we don’t have a special greeting for this special moment 😉

I hope this brief explanation has made it more clear to you.
