Practice Dialogues: Ordering Cheese in Czech

To help you shop like a local, I have prepared two dialogues that take place at a supermarket counter. Practice these conversations, and you’ll soon find yourself ordering cheese with confidence and flair.

Dialogue 1:

Jaké máte přání?
(What would you like?)

Čtyřicet deka eidamu.
(Forty decagrams of Edam.)

A chcete ho v celku nebo na plátky?
(Would you like it whole or sliced?)

Na plátky, prosím.
(Sliced, please.)

Ještě něco dalšího?
(Anything else?)

Ano, dvacet deka goudy v celku, prosím.
(Yes, twenty decagrams of Gouda, whole, please.)

Tady to máte. Ještě nějaké jiné přání?
(Here you go. Any other wishes?)

Ano, deset deka uzeného sýru.
(Yes, ten decagrams of smoked cheese.)

Chcete ho nakrájet?
(Would you like it sliced?)

Ne, v celku, prosím.
(No, whole, please.)

Něco dalšího?
(Anything else?)

Ne, děkuji. To bude vše. Na shledanou.
(No, thank you. That will be all. Goodbye.)

Na shledanou.
(Goodbye.)

Dialogue 2:

Co si přejete, prosím?
(What would you like, please?)

Třicet deka ementálu, prosím. Můžete mi ho, prosím, nakrájet?
(Thirty decagrams of Emmental, please. Can you slice it for me, please?)

Ano, samozřejmě. Tady to máte. Je to všechno?
(Yes, of course. Here you go. Is that all?)

Ano, děkuji. Na shledanou.
(Yes, thank you. Goodbye.)

Na shledanou.
(Goodbye.)

Fast Version: Feel the Rush

Once you’re comfortable, try practicing these dialogues at a faster pace to mimic real-life conversations. Train your ears and speak as fast as we Czechs do — it’s a thrilling challenge!
