Episode 38 (daily podcast CZECH YOUR DAY) transcript included

THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: CHEESE/SÝR

THE TRANSCRIPT/HANDOUT IS DOWN BELOW

In today’s episode, we’ll have a look at how Czechs pronounce most popular kinds of cheese and their gender. Why? You will see down below.

Cheese by Gender

  • Ten eidam (Edam): This popular choice often appears in fried cheese dishes in the Czech Republic.
  • Ten hermelín: A Czech twist on the classic Camembert.
  • Ten romadur: Known for its potent aroma, this cheese is often jarred to contain its scent.
  • Ten ementál (Emmentaler): With its signature big holes, this cheese needs no introduction.
  • Ten parmezán / Ten parmazán (Parmesan): While both versions are correct, the latter resonates better with some, yet dictionaries favor the former.
  • Ten čedar (Cheddar): The beloved cheese recognized universally.
  • Ta niva: The Czech version of this blue cheese (Roquefort).
  • Ta gouda: Often used – in fried cheese as well.
  • Ta Mozzarella: its spelling remains aligned with its Italian roots.
  • Ta Koliba: A treasured smoked cheese originally from Slovakia.

Quantities

What happens when we say eg. 200 grams of Cheddar? Dvacet deka čedarU. (Yes, genitive case is used here).

And how about gouda? Ta gouda – dvacet deka goudY.

Engage with a Question

Before we wrap up, I have two questions for you to practice:

  • Jaký je tvůj oblíbený sýr? (What is your favorite cheese?)
  • Kolik sýru si obvykle kupuješ? (How much cheese do you usually buy?)
