All Aboard: Understanding Transport Vocabulary

Learning a new language includes knowing how to get from place to place, so let’s dive into some essential Czech transport vocabulary. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced learner, there’s something here for everyone.

Czech and English Transport Terms

Let’s start with a brief glossary of common transport terms, first in Czech and then in English:

  • Vlak
    • Train
  • Autobus
    • Bus
  • Trolejbus
    • Trolleybus
  • Tramvaj
    • Tram
  • Auto
    • Car
  • Metro
    • Underground/Subway
  • Taxi/Taxík
    • Taxi (informal)

Advanced Challenge: Test Your Understanding

For those who want to put their skills to the test, here’s a fun challenge. I’ll provide descriptions of these modes of transport. See if you are able to understand (you can find the version in Czech in the handout down below):

  1. Ten vlak: This transport travels on tracks. To board, you need a ticket (eg. from Prague to Brno).
  2. Ten autobus: This city vehicle requires a bus ticket and stops at bus stations.
  3. Ten trolejbus: Similar to a bus but it needs overhead wires and runs on electricity.
  4. Ta tramvaj: You’ll find this mostly in cities like Prague and Brno, needing tracks. Note, in Brno, it’s called „šalina.“
  5. To auto: A four-wheeled road vehicle. We frequently use it to go to the supermarket, for trips or holidays.
  6. To metro: Mainly under the ground. Quick even during traffic jams. Available exclusively in Prague in the Czech Republic.
  7. To taxi/ten taxík: A special car with a driver. It can take you anywhere, like to the airport. Note: „taxík“ is informal; avoid it in formal exams.
