Today, we’re unwrapping the nuances of modal verbs like can, mustn’t, and may. These are truly worth learning for your Czech conversations.

Let’s uncover them one by one and see how they translate into English.

moci – sounds more formal (a little bit like an old professor ;))

Examples:

  • Co si můžu vzít s sebou do letadla?
    What can I take on the plane?
  • Můžu si vzít s sebou batoh nebo malý kufr.
    I can take a backpack or a small suitcase.
  • I am allowed to
    • Já smím
  • You are allowed to
    • Ty smíš

Examples:

  • Do letadla si smím vzít menší batoh a kabelku.
    I am allowed to take a small backpack and a handbag on the plane.
  • Na palubu si smím vzít telefon, nabíječku a notebook.
    I’m allowed to bring my phone, charger, and laptop on board.
  • I must not
    • Já nesmím
  • You mustn’t
    • Ty nesmíš

Examples:

  • V letadle nesmíš kouřit.
    You aren’t allowed to or you mustn’t smoke on the plane.
  • Nesmíš jít na záchod, když letadlo přistává.
    You are not allowed to go to the bathroom when the plane lands.

Examples:

  • Musím se připoutat, budeme přistávat.
    I need to buckle up, we are gonna land.
  • Musíš mít pas, když jedeš na dovolenou do zahraničí.
    You must have a passport when you go on holiday abroad.

Additional Useful Phrases

  • Když má kufr malá kolečka, můžeš s ním jezdit po zemi.
    If the suitcase has small wheels, you can drive it on the ground.
  • Nemusíš ho nosit.
    You don’t have to carry it.
