Episode 36 (daily podcast CZECH YOUR DAY) transcript included

THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: CHEESE/SÝR

THE TRANSCRIPT/HANDOUT IS DOWN BELOW

This week, we’re focusing on expressions you might encounter when requesting or identifying different types of cheese. Not only will this help you while shopping, but it’ll also make cooking and dining in the Czech Republic a breeze. And remember, real-life Czech often sounds a bit different from textbook Czech, so we’ll cover the informal versions too!

Common Czech Cheese Expressions

  • In One Piece (V celku)
  • Sliced (Plátkový)
  • Smoked (Uzený)— Mám ráda uzený sýr.
  • Grated (Strouhaný)
  • Cubed into Small Pieces (Na kostičky)
  • Cubed into Larger Pieces (Na kostky)

Putting It All Together

Here’s a summary with examples in both formal and informal Czech:

  • Sýr v celku: Cheese in one piece
  • Plátkový sýr: Sliced cheese
  • Uzený sýr: Smoked cheese
  • Strouhaný sýr: Grated cheese
  • Sýr na kostičky: Cheese cut into small cubes
  • Sýr na kostky: Cheese cut into larger cubes

And for the informal versions:

  • Plátkovej: Informal way to say sliced
  • Uzenej: Informal for smoked
  • Strouhanej: Informal for grated

Now used in sentences:

Když děláš smažený sýr, potřebuješ sýr v celku.
Translation: „When you make fried cheese, you need cheese in one piece.“

  • Když si připravuješ toust se sýrem, potřebuješ plátkový sýr.
Translation: „When you make a cheese toast, you need sliced cheese.“
  • Když si děláš špagety, potřebuješ strouhaný sýr.
Translation: „When you make spaghetti, you need grated cheese.“
  • Když chceš tapas, je dobré mít sýr na kostičky.
